SKATEBOARD PARK UNDER INTERSTATE 880, Oakland, CA
A Dead-End Street is transformed into the art plaza, arrival point to the Skateboard Park and landing for the new pedestrian bridge. LED lights and computer software create an ever-changing scene under the on-ramp structure that interacts with the sky beyond or programmed in response to the occasion or event below. This design transforms the derelict area under and around the Interstate-880 overpass from a place people want to avoid to one where people want to be. Spaces adapted for activities that attract instead of repelling will create a catalyst for positive physical change in the surrounding neighborhoods.
